I just upgraded the computer a nd now my old prolific chip based USB to serial converter isn't recognized. What are others using? FTDI chips are supposed to be better? |

The usual problem is that your old converter doesn't have the proper software, known as a driver, to control the hardware. Ideally, you would be able to go to the manufacturer of that converter and download new Win 8 compatible software--I was able to get new software for my old Canon printer, about a year after I switched to Windows 7. In the meantime, I bought a new laser printer that was Win 7 compatible. Zack Lau W1VT ARRL Senior Lab Engineer |

Google is your friend! Search on "windows 8 usb serial driver". You may find info on your device. As to FTDI, I found this: FTDI Info. That looks promising. Limited device driver availability is an excellent reason not to upgrade your OS too quickly! 73, Martin AA6E ARRL Technical Advisor |

Got it. Running FT232 UART USB... Model FTDI - A36. Windows 8 found it no problem. |

I purchased a model XS880 --- Ultimate Serial Adapter ---from USCONVERTERS.COM. It works with Windows 8 and MY FT-920. I will probably purchase two or three more. NU8L |
