The ARRL has a proud tradition of promoting youth involvement in Amateur Radio. One of the ways we involve young people in our hobby is through our Youth Editor. This person is responsible for writing a monthly column for the ARRL website about youth and youth activities within the Amateur Radio Service.

We are looking for a new Youth Editor. Do you know of someone who would be a good fit for this position? Maybe they hold leadership positions either in their Section or in their local club. The candidate must be an ARRL member and must keep their membership current throughout their tenure in the position. He or she will be required to write a monthly column of at least 1000 words and provide a minimum of three pictures (with captions) for each. For this, they will receive a small stipend for each column.

Our first Youth Editor was Brian Mileshosky, N5ZGT. You might know him better as the ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Director. When Brian resigned from the position, Andrea Hartlage, KG4IUM, took over writing this monthly column. Andrea continued to be very involved with youth activities, especially leading the Youth Lounge located within the ARRL EXPO area at the Dayton Hamvention; you have probably seen her there with her dad Scott, KF4PWI. In 2008, Andrea resigned from the position when she entered Georgia Tech, and in 2010, she was elected the ARRL Southeastern Division Vice Director. Both Brian and Andrea were the recipients of the ARRL’s Hiram Percy Maxim Award and were also honored as AR Newsline’s Young Ham of the Year. The torch next passed to Duncan MacLachlan, KU0DM. In 2009, Duncan attended the Dayton Hamvention and started “tweeting” youth activities on the new ARRL Youth Twitter account. Unfortunately, Duncan tendered his resignation last year.

“The Youth column is a column written by youth for youth -- not written by parents,” said ARRL News Editor S. Khrystyne Keane, K1SFA. “While we expect parents to give feedback, we do not want the parents doing the column in place of the Youth Editor, or ‘prettying up’ the column before it is submitted.” The Youth Editor will work with Khrystyne via e-mail, phone and social networking.
