Surfin’: Fixing Our Writing
By Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU

This week, Surfin’ visits a website that attempts to correct our bad writing habits.
Chris Codella, W2PA, sent me an e-mail last week and mentioned that “after years of reading lots of blogs, newsgroups, fora, ads for equipment and other radio-related material on the web written by hams, it’s hard to believe that so many of us make the same basic mistakes. I realize this is not fixable, but I figured I’d make an attempt to gently point out a small set of the most obvious ones, which are also the easiest to fix.”
Chris compiled them in an article titled “Common Writing Mistakes on the Internet.” It includes a lot of my pet peeves, but not all (I should start compiling my own list).
One of my pet peeves is putting too much faith in your spell check. I use spell check on everything I write, but if I don’t reread what I wrote after a spell check, what I write may not be right. For example, “what I right may not be write.” Do you get my meaning?
Getting back to W2PA, in addition to the above-mentioned article, Chris has an interesting website. It includes restoration and improvement articles for the Collins S-line, Heathkit SB-101 and the Drake T-4XB, among others.
With Field Day still fresh in our memories, I enjoyed Chris’ “Ancient Field Days” photo gallery.
Until next time, Happy Independence Day and keep on surfin’!
Editor’s note: W2PA’s website has motivated Stan Horzepa, WA1LOU, to do something about his Collins hand-me-downs. To contact Stan, send e-mail or add comments to the WA1LOU blog.
