Organizations Developing Standards and Policies Related to EMC
Indroduction
There are a number of organizations and regulatory agencies directly working in the field of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). ARRL staff maintain relationships with many of these organizations, to ensure that the interests of Amateur Radio are represented as these grouos write standards and create EMC policy.
U.S. EMC Organizaitons
American National Standards Institute (ANSI): ANSI is a standards accediting organization, overseeing the development of technological standards across a wide range of technologies.
ANSI accredited C63: C63® is a US standards organization developing EMC standards that cover general EMC, test methods, definitions, immunity, medical devices and transmitter testing. ARRL is an organizational member of C63®, represented by ARRL Laboratory Manager Ed Hare, W1RFI as the primary representative. Ed also chairs the C63® Subcommittee 5 on EMC inmmunity.
IEEE EMC Society Standards Development Committee (SDCOM): The International Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) is comprised of a number of Societies focused on specific technological disciplines. SDCom is an oversight board, monitoring and supervising the development of a number of IEEE EMC standards. ARRL Laboratory Manager Ed Hare, W1RFI, serves on SDCom as its elected Secretary.
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) EMC Standards Committee: The SAE EMC Standards Committee has representation from most vehicle manufacturers and equipment suppliers. ARRL maintains liaison and membership with this committee to help it consider the needs of Amateur Radio as it writes automotive EMC standards.
EMC Organizations in Other Countries
Electromagnetic Compatibility Industry Association (UK): EMCIA is an organization that is comprised of a large number of companies that market products in the United Kingdom. It develops EMC positions and policies.
International EMC Organizations
CISPR: This is the Comité International Spécial des Perturbations Radioélectriques (French), translated as the Special international committee on radio interference. It writes international standards to help control electromagnetic interference (EMI) in electrical and electronic devices. CISPR is a part of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
