Take a walk down memory lane with these holiday themed QST covers from the 1950s to 1980s.
December 1954 – Jolly Old St. Nick takes flight with a mobile ham setup in a classic illustration by H. R. Hick. Santa’s sleigh even bears a license place that offers greetings from the North Pole: “NP 73.”
December 1956 – A serene, snowy townscape by H.R. Hick features a glimpse of through a window of a ham seated at his station, looking intent on making contacts.
December 1957 – This cartoon by Phil “Gil” Gildersleeve, W1CJD, which shows a young ham daydreaming about finding an upgraded station under the tree, captures the hopeful sentiment of the season.
December 1975 – Here’s a riff on the popular “Christmas tree circuit board” project, with resistors and capacitors serving as ornaments, and wire for garland.
December 1978 – The caption for this festive photo asks, “What better gift is there to amateurs-to-be around the developing world than the IARU 20-meter pair?” A feature article in the issue fully describes the 6-watt transmitter. The receiver was featured in the April 1978 issue.
December 1986 – The Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio, OSCAR I, was launched in December 1961. This cartoon by Jim Massara, N2EST/4, celebrates 25 years of amateur radio in space with a salute from Santa.
