Rod Stafford, W6ROD
Rod lives in San Jose, California and has been licensed as an amateur radio operator for over 40 years. He is a Life Member of the ARRL. Former calls include WD6AKS and KB6ZV. Rod has held numerous volunteer positions with the ARRL. He served as Section Manager for the Santa Clara Valley from 1983 to 1985. He became the Pacific Division Director in 1986 and served in that position until 1990 when the ARRL Directors elected him as the Second Vice President. In 1992 he was elected by the Board to the position of First Vice President and in 1994 he was re-elected to that position. In 1995, Rod became ARRL President when the then-President stepped down for health reasons. He was re-elected by the ARRL Board of Directors to the office of President in 1996 and 1998 and served in that position until 2000. In 2000, the Board of Directors elected Rod to the position of International Affairs Vice President and he served in that position until 2010. Rod became the IARU Secretary in 2010 and served in that position until 2017. While serving as IARU Secretary Rod attended, and continues to attend, International Telecommunication Union Development Sector meetings representing the IARU. In 2020, the Board of Directors elected Rod again as International Affairs Vice President. Over the years, Rod has served on, or chaired, nearly all of the standing committees of the ARRL Board of Directors and served on numerous other ad hoc committees and task forces created by the Board. Rod is active on the HF bands including 10 through 40 meters. He enjoys DXing and rag chewing on HF and making friends on the air. He is also active on the VHF and UHF repeaters in the San Jose area. He graduated from California State University, San Diego and received a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law (1972). After practicing law in the San Jose area for about 16 years, Rod was appointed to the bench in Santa Clara County, California. Rod retired in 2009 from the Santa Clara County Superior Court and has continued to work in the Assigned Judge Program hearing criminal cases 2009-2019. Other interests include photography, golf and RVing. Rod’s wife is Pat, N1PAT and his granddaughter is Victoria, K6VIK (ARRL Life Member).
